Book Review:
Jeanne Buesser has written a wonderful and educating story. Many, many children are affected by speech disorders. The story teaches the reader about this condition which many people are unaware of, especially children. I applaud Jeanne for raising the awareness of this through a children’s story. There is a stigma attached to these kinds of disabilities; people tend to think that children like this are not smart. This important point is mentioned in the story. Well done.
The story “He Talks Funny”, is about a “special needs child” who has a severe neurological speech disorder and cannot be understood when he talks. How his mother helps educate his counselor and campmates about her son’s disability is the essence of the boy’s acceptance into camp. The manuscript has been read by speech and language pathologists. They have found it satisfactory.
Book Excerpt: chapter I
“HE TALKS FUNNY”
BY JEANNE BUESSER
One day, Joey was in the Camp Green’s playground playing by himself.
He was new to the camp. A little girl about his age came to talk to him.
“Hello, “said the girl. “I’m Irma. What’s your name?”.
Looking up at her from his swing, Joey said slowly, “Joooiieee.”
“What ?” said Irma. As Joey repeated his name, Irma tried but couldn’t
understand him. She said to the other children nearby,
“He talks funny”. She ran away.
Joey watched her leave and a sadness came into his eyes.
“Why didn’t she stay?” he asked himself.
The camp counselor, Mrs. Thomas, saw what happened.” What is the matter?” she asked.
“I ant no, “Joey said. Mrs. Thomas couldn’t understand him either.
Then she saw an ID bracelet around Joey’s wrist. It had Joey Brown’s name and phone
number on it. She smiled at him, saying “I’ll be right back.” She went to her office and
dialed the number.
Mrs. Thomas was a retired school teacher, and she knew many reasons why some children
couldn’t speak clearly. She remembered learning about speech problems when she was a
student teacher. She knew that she should ask Joey’s mother how she could help.
The phone rang and at the other end Joey’s mother answered,
” Hello? This is Mrs. Brown speaking.”
Mrs. Thomas explained who she was and why she was calling.
“Oh, Joey’s speech is not always clear,” said Mrs. Brown.
“I’m sorry you’re having a problem. I’ll be right over to explain further. Thank you for
calling”.
Mrs. Thomas went back to Joey, who was on the slide. “Joey, come with me and I’ll
show you around the camp while we’re waiting for your mother to come,” she said.
“We have a soccer field, table tennis, a lake for swimming and lots more.”
Soon, Mrs. Brown arrived. “Mrs. Thomas?” she said, “I’m Joey’s mother.”
Joey reached for his mother’s hand and held it tightly while the two women talked. ” I’m
sorry that Joey is having a hard time making himself understood, “explained Mrs. Brown.
“He understands everything you say and wants to answer you clearly, but there is sort of a
loose connection in the part of his brain that processes speech. The speech therapist who
is working with him says that some of his mouth muscles have a hard time saying certain
sounds. Because of this, he can’t form the sounds that we use for certain words.
Joey nodded his head and smiled at Mrs. Thomas, who seemed very interested.
“So many words in a seven year old boy struggling to get out,” thought the
counselor sympathetically. She turned to Joey, “I want to learn how to listen to you.
Will you help me?”
Joey nodded and said, “Yet”.
“That means, yes” said Joey’s mom. “He has trouble with the
“s” sound.”
“What are you doing to help him? How can I help?” asked Mrs. Thomas.
Mrs. Brown replied, “Joey’s had speech lessons ever since we found out about this
difficulty when he was about two and a half years old. No one could
understand him at all then. He works very hard every day practicing his speech exercises.
We understand more of what he says all the time.”
Just then, Joey pulled on his mom’s arm and announced, ” Mom, I’m hungry, and botty”.
Mrs. Brown smiled and said to him,” Oh, you mean ‘thirsty‘.” Mrs. Thomas looked
surprised, as Mrs. Brown explained that some words come out clearly, while other
sounds are hard for him like ‘th` and ‘s`, “We keep hoping to see more progress each
day, as he remembers how to make the proper sounds.”
Joey,” said Mrs. Thomas, “why don’t you go get a snack. There are juice boxes and
cookies on the table.” Joey smiled and ran over to the table with the snacks.
Satisfied, he sat down.
“Joey often pronounces ‘fish` as ‘bish`, ‘sandwich` as ‘tandwich `, ‘s` , ‘th` , and ‘f`
are also hard. ‘Yes` comes out as ‘yet`. ‘l` becomes ‘w` as in the color, ‘ye-wow.`
Joey goes to a special school where they give him speech training every day. We hope
one day he’ll be in a regular school and experience a wider range of classmates.
That’s why he’s in this camp for the month of August, so he can make the most of his
improved speech and make new friends,” Joey’s mom explained further.
Mrs. Brown showed Mrs. Thomas and her assistant, who was nearby, some flash cards
that Joey’s speech therapist was using to help him. They each had a picture
With the correct word printed below, that Joey could show another person to
clarify what he was trying to say.” Mrs. Brown continued, “.These cards help keep the
frustration level down, since the speech impaired child has a tool to help him be
understood, as well as a guide for learning to read.”
“Is there a name for this severe speech disability ?”asked the assistant.
“Yes” said Mrs. Brown, “It’s called ‘apraxia’. Every child who has it is may have it
with additional problems as well. In Joey’s case he is a smart boy, but because he
doesn’t speak clearly, some people may think he can’t think clearly, either. Not true. It’s
like the old proverb: ‘you can’t judge a book by its cover’.”
By this time Joey had seen a jigsaw puzzle in the game cabinet, and was sitting alone
trying to figure it out. “Do you want some help, Joey? asked Mrs. Thomas.
Joey nodded yes. It was a hard puzzle.
Knowing how much Irma liked to do puzzles, Mrs. Thomas called Irma over. She
explained about Joey’s speech problem, then said to Irma, “You’ll learn to understand
what he’s saying in time. Would you like to help him with the puzzle that
he’s trying to do now?”.
“Yes, I would,” said Irma. “I’m sorry I ran away before. I just got scared ‘cause I
didn’t know how to answer him. But from now on, I’ll try harder to listen.”
Irma turned to Joey. “May I help you with that puzzle?” she asked.
“Yet” he said.
As she sat down to work with Joey, Irma said to Mrs. Brown,
“Maybe I can tell some of the other kids that Joey needs to practice talking. I think they’ll
want to help him, too, and have him play in their games. I’ll help him make friends.”
“Thank eyoo,” said Joey.
As Mrs. Brown was saying goodbye to Mrs. Thomas, she gave her a few pamphlets.
“These are some of the recent articles about apraxia by speech therapists,” offered Mrs.
Brown. “Until recently there was no word for this disorder, and not many speech teachers
knew how to treat it successfully”.
“Thank you,” said Mrs. Thomas.” I’m also going to the library tonight to look up
“apraxia” on the Internet. I’ve learned a lot today, thanks to you and Joey.”
Mrs. Brown smiled, and watched her son working with Irma on the puzzle. She thought,
“I think Joey’s made a new friend today.”
“See you later, Joey”.
“Bye, Irma”!
“Good-bye Mrs. Brown, “called Irma. “Don’t worry, we’ll play with Joey from now on.”

This week’s guest author is Jacob Singer.
Jacob Asher Singer was born in 1935 in Potchefstroom, a town near Johannesburg, in South Africa. After attending the Potchefstroom High School for Boys, he studied pharmacy at Chelsea Polytechnic in London, England. He was a practicing pharmacist in Potchefstroom for the next 25 years. Although Jacob was not politically active, he met and knew many active players on both sides of the political fence. When he was threatened by the security police for withholding information, he encouraged his children to emigrate, and once they had established themselves, he and his wife, Evelyn, joined them in 1992. His first book, Brakenstroom, is a book of short stories about life in Potchefstroom.
Here I am going to put some links for authors looking for publishers, press release information self publishing backlinking and crawling your book’s website on the web:
THE VASE WITH THE MANY COLOURED MARBLES.Review:
“I Don’t mean to say there are major problems with the book; quite the contrary. It’s an interesting story set during an interesting period in history, which is the essence of a good marketable book. It’s something about which most Americans know very little, too, so I like it from the educational perspective as well. “
Lynn Maria Thompson
Book 1, EMMA.
The story is about a young coloured girl born into the apartheid system of South Africa. As she grows up, she finds that being classified a second class citizen unbearable, and decides to cross the colour barrier and become a white.
This is Emma’s story, how she crosses the colour barrier, and how she does enter the white community, but not in Cape Town where she was born , but in Johannesburg. She becomes friendly with a Jewish Family who escaped Nazi Germany, and decides the apartheid policies of Hendrik Verwoerd, the Prime Minister is pro-Nazi, and that it will just be a matter of time before gas chambers are built. She joins the father of a friend, Charles Stuart who fought the Boers in the Anglo Boer war, and she makes a life for herself in a town called Potchefstroom, that is very pro- Government. Charlie Stuart has her join his secret organisation working against the apartheid system. She does.
She meets a young man, and has a baby with him. He is killed in the war (WWII), leaving her with a daughter, Marla. She is determined that Marla will grow up a white, and never know of her coloured background.
In her work, she comes into contact with more and more blacks, and concludes that they will never ever govern the country efficiently because of their tribal upbringing. She decides that they have to be educated efficiently, and effectively, something the government opposes.
Book 2. MARLA.
Marla grows up in Potchefstroom as a white, attending Afrikaans schools at her mother’s insistence, because Emma believes that not all Afrikaaners are racist Nazis. Because Marla’s skin is of a darker colour than most whites, she does experience a degree of discrimination, but with the help of Josh, a friend she meets at the Municipal swimming pool, she overcomes this discrimination, regarding it more as a joke than otherwise.
After she has completed her schooling, and obtaining a degree at the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, she decides to hike through Europe with a number of friends. While hiking through the Lake District she breaks an ankle, and so meets Albert Winslow. They fall in love. He is the son of Lord Peter and Lady Isabel Winslow. Peter Winslow is the founder and owner of the Winslow chain of stores, and is probably the fourth richest man in England. Albert, known to Marla as Bertie, does not want Marla to know who his father is. He completes his business assignments in France in a hurry, and returns to woo Marla, but finds that because of her broken ankle, she has decided to return to South Africa. He joins her on the ship, and decides that she should marry him without being influenced by his wealth. He persuades her to marry him on board ship by the ship’s Captain. Marla agrees and they are married.
When the ship docks in Cape Town, and Emma meets them at the harbour, Emma is approached by her brother, a harbour worker. He tells her that their mother is dying. Bertie and Marla tell her that they wish to marry. She then decides to tell Marla who her family are so that her dying mother can meet a granddaughter that she never knew existed,. She is worried that Bertie may give up Marla, when he learns that Marla is a Coloured and not a White. Bertie then tells her that he and Marla are already man and wife and that he would love to meet her family.
They decide to have a proper white wedding in Potchefstroom, with all their friends. It is after the wedding, that Bertie tells them who his parents are, and that he is a very wealthy man in his own right. Marla is shocked, as is Emma.
Bertie and Marla return to London, after throwing a party for the Cape Town family. Emma returns to Johannesburg and finds that living alone without a daughter is too much for her. She decides to join Marla in London. Charlie Stuart supplies her with a passport, and she joins Marla within the year.
EPITAPH.
The rest is history and appears in the Epitaph ending when Emma passes away of old age.
WHY I HAVE WRITTEN THE BOOK.
The story is based on truth, a story I have lived with all my life. The characters are all based on people I have met and known in my life. It is a story that has to be told so that people in the world can realize the true horror of the Apartheid system, still practised today by countries that discriminate against its population because of religious beliefs. It is also for those counties who discriminate against women, because they interpret their religion incorrectly and classify women as second class citizens.
Yes, I was threatened by the South Africa Security police, and yes I did donate thousands of Rand to the education system in Potchefstroom, and yes, everything I did, not even my wife knew about. I joined the National Party, and worked to temper their hatred until the kicked me out. My son, years later, when he attended the Afrikaans University in Stellenbosch, phoned me years later, and told me that certain students were forming a NAZI party at the University. I told him to join it and read the diary of Anne Frank to the members. The Party dissolved itself at the second meeting.
The book is also for the world to realize that a Black governed Africa is a disaster. One has seen this decay in Zambia, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and other countries in Africa, and South Africa is rapidly following suit, with the exception of Cape Town, where the City, managed by a predominantly non-black city council, is still a beautiful city to live in.
As Emma said when an African American remarked proudly at a Dance of the King in Swaziland, in 1958.
“These are my people.”
“Emma replied, “The only thing you have in common with them is the colour of your skin.”
The above is a true story and has proved prophetic as shown by President Barak Obama of the United States of America, who even though refers to himself as an African American, has only the colour of his skin in common with the black population of Africa.
THE MARKET.
I believe that the market for the book, The Vase with many Coloured Marbles, will be The United Kingdom, The United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, countries South Africans have emigrated to as crime and decay have built up in the country. The book will also sell in South Africa.
I have a previously written a book, self published called BRAKENSTROOM, short stories about life in Potchefstroom. Without any advertising, in Vancouver alone, and in Potchefstroom, the book has sold over 500 copies.

If You Love a Book Author and Want to Help Them …
18 Ways to Help a Book Author You Love
Eileen Flanagan, author of The Wisdom to Know the Difference, wrote a blog post about a year ago telling friends of book authors how they could help the author sell more books. You can read her blog post here: http://bit.ly/9v5TgA.
I thought I’d include some of the highlights of her help list, add my own comments, and provide a few more ways that friends can help book authors to sell more books.
If you have a friend who is a book author, please use these suggestions to help them out. If you are a book author, please share this page with your friends (so they can help you out).
1. Buy your friend’s book. Encourage other friends to buy the book. Go to your local library or bookstore and encourage them to buy the book. Buy books as gifts.
2. Don’t put off buying the book. Don’t wait for the holidays to buy the book as a gift. First, the sooner you buy, the more confidence you’ll inspire in your friend. Second, media and other decision makers pick up on a book based on the momentum the book inspires. The more sales at the beginning of the book’s life, the more attention it will get from key decision makers, the media, and consumers.
3. Where should you buy the book? First choice: the indie bookstore nearest you (that will help your friend get her book into that store on a regular basis). Second choice: a chain bookstore like Borders or Barnes & Noble (if they start selling the book locally, they might buy books for more stores in the chain). Third choice: the author’s website (the author makes the most money when selling direct). Fourth choice: buy direct from the author. Fifth choice: Buy from Amazon.com (preferably from the link on the author’s website).
4. Recommend your friend’s book. If you like the book, recommend it to friends. Blog about it. Tweet a review or mention. Share a note on Facebook. Recommend the book to your book group. Review her book on Amazon.com, BN.com, GoodReads, Library Thing, and other reader social networks.
5. Tell your friend what you like about the book. Provide your friend with support by telling him something you like about his book. Was it a good read? Did it move you to tears or laughter? Did you learn something new?
6. Help your friend get speaking engagements. If your friend is comfortable speaking, recommend your friend to your Rotary Club, Jaycees, church, Friends of the Library, bookseller, garden club, school, etc.
7. Recommend your friend’s website. Link to it from your website, blog, Facebook page, etc. Tweet about it. When your friend writes a blog post, link to it. If your friend tweets something great, retweet it. Feature a quote from your friend’s book on your website. Or tweet the quote.
8. Create a Wikipedia page for your friend. While authors can’t create their own Wikipedia page, other people can. Every book author deserves a Wikipedia page, since a published book grants the author at least a modicum of fame. On the Wikipedia page, feature a short bio, a bibliography, a link to the author’s website.
9. Help your friend with the media. If you know of any newspaper editors or reporters, magazine editors, radio producers or hosts, TV show hosts or producers, columnists, bloggers, etc., send them a copy of the book or a note about the author. Or tell your friend about your connection, and introduce her to your contact.
10. Pray. Prayer always helps. Pray for your friend and his book. If you’re not into prayer, ask your favorite tree to help.
11. Ask. Ask your friend how you can help her. You may have some talent, connection, specialized knowledge, etc. that might be just the thing she needs. Or they might just need some of your time to help pack and ship some books or make a few phone calls.
12. Do a video review of the book and post it on YouTube and other video sharing websites.
13. Help your friend make some videos for the book. Every author needs a cameraperson, a scriptwriter, a producer. Again, share on YouTube and other video sharing websites.
14. Look for specialty retailers. As you drive around your own hometown or a nearby larger city, keep on the lookout for specialty retailers that might be interested in selling your friend’s books. Cookbooks in gourmet shows, do-it-yourself books in hardware stores, children’s books in toy stores, art or history books at museum shops. Make the contacts yourself or pass them on to your friend to follow up.
15. Look for other sales venues. If your friend’s book is about retirement, check out accountants, tax lawyers, etc. who might be interested in buying copies to give to their clients. Health books, children’s books, and cookbooks might interest doctor and dentist offices. Health clubs might be interested in exercise or diet books. Again, make the contacts yourself or pass them on to your friend to follow up.
16. Suggest catalogs, associations, and other special sales opportunities. If you receive mail order catalogs that feature books like your friend’s book, tell her abour the catalog. The same with associations, groups, corporations, etc. that might be interested in buying bulk copies of your friend’s book.
17. Help them sell rights. If your friend’s novel would make a great movie and you have a connection to an A-list actor or producer who might be interested in making the movie, introduce your friend to your connection. The same with TV producers, audio publishers, agents, etc.
